Letter to the Three Wise Men

Dear Wise men,

We say goodbye to 2019, a wonderful year. We’ve been fortunate enough to meet many excited, fearful and hopeful women. Some who are mothers and some who are about to be.

For the new year (we can’t believe 2020 is here already!) we have a big wish list:

  • We wish that all women (single or in a couple) that want to become mothers start achieving that dream this year.
  • We wish that all of you can speak openly about wanting to become a mum in any context.
  • We wish that all children that were born through fertility treatments this year grow up to be happy as all children should.

And, we wish that in 2020 we continue to have open conversations and shared experiences in the LesMaternity community.

What you should know before having kids

Yes, your life will change. You will change.

Are you ready for the ride of your life? If you are pregnant or haven’t been a mother yet, then what we are about to discuss will become second nature to you very soon. Here are some things you should know before becoming a mother.

Your body will change

Even after the birth you will most likely still be wearing maternity clothes. It will take some time to get back into those high waisted jeans…

Be proud of your body! It birthed a child and its completely normal that it’s not the same as before. Take time to recover from your pregnancy and childbirth, enjoy time with your baby. There will be plenty of time to get back in those jeans.

Ask for help, but don’t believe what everyone says

Always ask for help when you need it remember you will be exhausted and defeated. Don’t feel guilty, no one expects you to do it all yourself. Talk to your partner, family, doctor, and friends, don’t let the anxiety of it all take over. Remember: you are also important.

Your relationship with your partner will change

You’ll wish you bought a bigger bed instead of a crib. At times you’ll be jealous of your partner, of their free time, of how they’re not pulling their weight…there’ll be less sex…and if there is it’ll be very quiet…

Keep communicating with them.

Sleep

It’s natural that you’ll try to get a lot of things done while the baby is sleeping but don’t forget you need sleep too.

It hurts a lot

Childbirth, stitches and breastfeeding it all hurts.

Breastfeed if you want and can but don’t stress yourself over it. All feeding options are good feeding options.

Welcome to the world of pee and poo

Wet wipes will save your life, there’s nothing having one handy can’t solve. You will transition from a person who used to find burps and poos disgusting to… someone who looks forward to them…

Try and relax as much as you can

Don’t let anyone compare you or your baby to anyone else and don’t let people’s comments get to you, think about you and your family.

Instagram is not real life

It’s much better than that!

This is their story:

We are Laura and Maria Jose.

Like many other couples who have been together for 6 and a half years, we made one of the most important decisions of our lives: STARTING OUR OWN FAMILY!

During our research, we had a lot of doubts, which made us feel like we had even more questions.

Finally, we found this website by accident.  We thought it was very interesting how other couples, like us, could make their wish of BECOMING MUMS come true, so we reached out to Bea.

They got back to us very quickly.  We had a meeting where she explained the steps and shared her own experience. She told us that we should get in touch with the clinic.

We called and everything from then on went very quickly.  The staff was friendly and attentive all the time.

We started this journey on October 3rd, 2016 with some setbacks, all mostly related to the timing of menstruation, but eventually, we were on track.

After some routine visits to the clinic, M. Jose started the hormone treatments on the third day of her period.

Sometime later after several more routine checks, Dr. Luis finally set the date (everything moved really fast, but the process itself was very slow and daunting).

The artificial insemination was performed on October 17, 2016, and we had to wait 15 days for the result.

We tried to be realistic about it all since the statistics show that the odds are low in our situation, but we also were optimistic that maybe our hopes and dreams would help us beat those odds.

Finally, the day to take the pregnancy test came. With some nerves and a lot of excitement, we waited 3 minutes for the result: POSITIVE!

In that moment of surprise, joy, and excitement you forget all the waiting, nerves and treatments that got you here. You can only think about how your dreams just came true.

We are now 11 weeks into the pregnancy and during our 6 week ultrasound we could hear our baby’s heartbeat.

We would like to thank Lesmaternity, especially Bea, for all the help and attentiveness during the process and pregnancy, and most of all, for her honesty. 

I also want to thank Dr. Luis and his staff for showing us such great professionalism and kindness.

To all those other couples out there we would like to say that they should never give up on their dreams.  Sooner or later they will come true.

We thought 2015 would be our time to become mums.

We foolishly thought that any fertility clinic in Barcelona could help us with the ROPA method (since in the 10 years we’ve been together, this has been how we envisioned our life plan working out).  We were so wrong!

We started doing some price checking and going to different appointments, and they all insisted they had a lot of experience with ROPA. Finally, we settled on a well-known clinic.

From then our bad experience began. The team members would act like they disapproved or were surprised we would choose the ROPA method over IVF or even AI. We also had a lot of difficulties getting them to schedule us together and then we had two consecutive failed attempts (without frozen embryos).

After this disappointment, we decided to push it to 2016.  We found Lesmaternity and we were interested in knowing what made them stand out, so we contacted them.

When we met with Beatriz and later with Dr. Zamora we realised we didn’t have to put it off anymore.  There was another way.  They had a professional team, including front desk, accounting, nursing, anesthesiologists, biologists, and of course gynecologists.

Everything has been excellent and their experience with lesbian couples is remarkable.  (We assume that a big part of this is due to Lesmaternity)

To make a long story short, if everything goes right we will become mums to two babies next August. This is exactly what we wished for and we are so happy to hear that Lesmaternity has kept helping more women like us.

While doing research about different centres and clinics we stumbled upon an article about ROPA and we loved it.  I’ve always wanted to be pregnant and feel a life growing inside me so we decided that I would be the implanted mother and, since she is younger, my partner would be the biological one.  This way we would both feel like mums.

At first, we went to a well-known clinic in Barcelona, but we were very disappointed when they told us that we had to be married or in a defacto relationship in order to proceed. We knew that this isn’t something that heterosexual couples have to deal with.  We felt a bit helpless.

We found out that the LesMaternity MHC girls were having a briefing about the ROPA method at Casal Lambda.  We enjoyed the meeting so much that by the end of it we knew we wanted to try the method with them.

A couple of months later our test was positive! During our first ultrasound, we heard two heartbeats and found out we were expecting twins!

We are now two expectant mothers waiting for two babies that will be the light of our lives, all thanks to Lesmaternity and that initial meeting.”
