As single mothers or as a lesbian couple, and according to the current Spanish legislation, you can choose among the following Assisted Reproductive Treatments (ART):
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is an Assisted Reproduction Treatment (ART) which is characterized by its fertilization which takes place artificially in a laboratory.
In order to obtain the oocytes it is necessary to stimulate the ovaries with gonadotropins. The objective is to achieve a sufficient number of oocytes that assures good success possibilities. Once the follicles have the necessary size, the eggs are obtained through an ovarian puncture.
The obtained eggs are inseminated with the sperm in a laboratory. In the days following the insemination, the evolution of the selected embryos is observed for their transfer. The embryonic transfer is a simple process that does not require either hospitalization or anesthesia. The transfer can take place 2 to 5 days after the egg harvest and in most cases two embryos are transferred.
For the artificial insemination a sample of sperm is prepared (from an anonymous donor) to be positioned in the uterine cavity of the patient during the peri-ovulatory phase.
Artificial insemination can be done during the natural or during a stimulated cycle. It is recommended to carry out the insemination during a stimulated cycle since the pregnancy rates are considerably higher.
ROPA or IVF: 5970€
Artificial insemination: 765 €

The vitrification of the oocytes is a technique which allows preserving the fertility since the egg cells are obtained via ovarian stimulation and frozen afterwards for their later use.
This option is perfect for women who are seeking pregnancy between 35-40 years-old or for women who have to undergo medical treatment like chemo/radiotherapy or ovarian surgery due to tumors or endometriosis which minimizes their ovarian reserve.
ROPA pregnancy or reciprocal IVF
It’s the perfect option for lesbian couples because it allows to both women to take part into the pregnancy process.
One of them will be the genetic mother and the other one the gestational mother. One of the women has to undergo an ovarian stimulation in order to get a sufficient number of oocytes for performing an In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).
Once the oocytes are retrieved they get fertilized with anonymous donor sperm. From this moment on the development of the embryos is monitored in the laboratory until they are transferred to the other mother.

The current Spanish law, “LEY 14/2006, May 26th about assisted reproduction treatments”, allows the total anonymity of the gamete donor, therefore, its identity will never be revealed. The donation is an altruistic act in which the donor rejects any fatherhood rights.
According to the Spanish law, any lesbian couple is free to go through the ROPA Pregnancy in Spain no matter her nationality or marital status, only the previous consent of both parties is required.
The Spanish law recognizes also that the baby born through a ROPA pregnancy is determined to be the son/daughter of the lesbian couple who was having the fertility treatment. This norm only applies for Spanish citizens, for the rest of the countries it will depend on their own regulations (You can check your specific case in our area dedicated to Legislation)

Sonia & Luisa:
“Looking for information about clinics specialized in ART, we found an article about ROPA Pregnancy and we fell in love with this treatment!. We wanted to get pregnant so we visited one of those famous clinics in Barcelona which invest so much money in advertisement. The visit was very disappointing as the doctor suggested us we had to be married to go through an ART when we knew it was not necessary. We fell very sad because of this discrimination.” (Read more...)
